This photo is taken in autumn in Australia. If you notice, the trees are NOT loosing their leaves. I didn't realize how much I missed leaves on trees until I moved to a place where most of the trees are deciduous instead of evergreens. Winter does not necessarily mean naked trees, infact one of the prettiest sights I've seen is snow on the leaves of (Eucalyptus) Snow Gums.
Here's some questions that often stump kids, depending on where they live. Perhaps you can casually ask these and leave them to think about the answer.
1. If the tree is evergreen, does it keep the same leaves its whole life? And if not, when do they fall off? Are they replaced straight away? How long does a leaf live on an evergreen tree anyhow? If leaves fall off the trees all year does this mean they have to be raked up all year?
2. If the tree is deciduous, what is the trigger for the leaves to start to turn color? Is it daylength or temperature or both or something else? Does daylight savings affect when the leaves will fall?
Just some thoughts to ponder with your kids.
